Native American History and Issues

Indigenous Peoples Day was instituted in 1992, on the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' 'discovery' of America on October 12, 1492. Its recognition has grown over the ensuing three decades, in some places celebrated along with Columbus Day, but increasingly in place of that holiday. Joe Biden was the first president to issue an official proclamation for the day in 2021.Arizona is not yet one of the states that officially recognizes Indigenous People's Day, but we're proud to say that our home city of Tempe, Arizona DOES officially recognize it, along with our big city neighbor of Phoenix, capital of the state.

We were in Mexico City in 1992 for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Of course in Mexico, there was a lot of counter-protests to the official commemoration. You can read about and see pictures of our trip in THIS ARTICLE WE WROTE FOR DAILY KOS.

We are offering 20% off a selection of 26 books for kids, teens and adults, through October 15th, 2023.
